In the late 1880s, William Jennings Demorest awarded these silver medal to schoolchildren for writing essays about Prohibition. Having made a fortune in publishing and the textile industry, Demorest began a political career including the 1888 nomination as the Prohibition Party candidate for lieutenant governor of New York.
