Nievre was a political department in central France during the 12th Century. The city of Nevers was the capitol. It was also the seat of a Bishopric and enjoyed a certain amount of political independence. The obverse of the silver denier shows a crude monogram of Guillaume IV. The reverse contains a crusader's cross, the most popular insignia of the time; this being the years between the second and third Crusades. Minted in Nevers about 1165 A.D.
