Beautiful nineteenth-century officer's badge from Deadwood. Probably sterling, thus perhaps pre-1880. Five-point star. On the reverse is engraved, "JGJ McHale/ American lodge IOOF/ Deadwood." The only JJ McHale we found in newspapers.com was killed in the tragic mine explosion in January 1895 at Butte. This may have been that man who migrated from the Deadwood mining community to Butte. Known for its gold rush boom in the late 1800s, Deadwood was a legendary Wild West town that drew prospectors, gamblers, and gunslingers, becoming infamous for figures like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
