"Churchill County" printed at top. Inc. in New York. No. 137, issued for 10 shares to WR Ward in 1865. Signed by president J. Turnbull Smith and secretary Green. Not cancelled. Three different mining vignettes. 7 x 10.75" Folds, light toning in edges. The most active district in Churchill at the time was La Plata, with a population of 150, which also served as the county seat from 1864-1868. This successful camp attracted enough capital to build a $125,000 mill by the Silver Wave Co., but lacked sufficient ore to make money. Another company is cited as having erected another mine and mill at Averill at the same time, suspected to be this company.
