Ellin Berlin (wife of Irving Berlin and granddaughter of John Mackay) has written a rag-to-riches story of her grandmother, Louise Mackay grew up in poverty and ended up with all the trappings of the wealthy and lived with the social elite. This book covers the crude life style in mining camps of California and Nevada and the lush life of Paris. 24 pages of pictures. Inscription from Ellin Berlin to John Fulton Jr. Spine is loose from the pages, but pages are still strongly attached. Includes a letter from Grant H. Smith who wrote "The History of the Comstock Lode" says that the marriage of the Mackay's took place on November 25, 1867. Father Manogue performed the ceremony and the Fair's were the witnesses. It also says that Mrs. Mackay was never a washerwoman, but taught French and music at the Sisters School. (Fulton Collection)
