A matching silver tiara and brooch, both dating c. 1907. The tiara is crafted to look like a Roman-style laurel wreath, with dozens of tiny leaves as well as delicate silver flowers and laurel berries (about 7.5"x6"). The matching brooch is made up of several silver laurel sprigs bound together by a waving silver ribbon that reads "1882 / 12 Oct. / 1907" (about 4" long). These pieces are a phenomenal example of Art Nouveau jewelry craftsmanship; this style drew heavily from natural botanical forms as well as the classical societies of Greece and Rome, and this influence is fully on display in these spectacularly detailed and delicate items. Both have some notable tarnish due to their age, and would need some polishing to return them to their former glory. See photos. This fabulous Tierra is from the collection of noted archaeologist Rudolf Ludwig Friedrich Herzog (b1871-d1953). He was an important archaeologist and lifelong student of the history and science of medicine. His father, Ernst Herzog (1834-1911), was a professor in Tübingen. He received his doctorate in 1894. As an advanced student, he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute in 1897, which allowed him to travel to ancient sites in the Mediterranean, particularly to the island of Kos. After completing his internship, he became a lecturer in 1899 and an associate professor in 1903. In 1902, with the help of Jakob Zarraptis, he discovered the Asclepius sanctuary of Kos, which has become known as the birthplace of medicine in the ancient world.
Herzog was elected Rector of the University of Giessen in 1928 for one year, then in 1933 he became university chancellor. He retired in 1936. Rudolf Herzog was a member of the Nazi Party (N.S.D.A.P.). In 1933 he became an honorary Doctor of the Medical School of the University of Rostock and in 1941 a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
