This North breach-loading rifle looks like the breach-loading rifle of 1819 invented by John Hall. When Harper's Ferry contacted outside for the model 1843 it was awarded to Simeon North; copying the Hall patent. North had proven himself a reliable contractor to the U.S. government and made 24,664 pieces of the Hall's patent percussion carbine. This one is marked at the breach "U.S. S. North MIDLtn. Conn. 1851" in three lines. At .52 cal. , 40 in. overall length, slide ring carbine with 21 in. barrel. The bore is good with some minor pitting. In working order. The North carbine is easily recognisable by the two barrel bands; the Hall version has a pinned barrel. There is an inspector's cartouche mark visible at the mortise behind the slide and ring "JJC" in an oval , John J. Cornwell Cdr., "WAT" in a rectangle on the lock mortise behind the action right side inspected by William A. Thornton Capt. and on the barrel right side near the breach is "HT" for H. Tracy armory sub-inspector. All other markings, E, F, are identifiers to E and F company, where CS and MN were the issued shooters. This rifle has many wear marks indicating active service and likely saw service during the Civil War. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. This is an antique, non FFL firearm. Please see photo for details. (ref. United States Martial Flintlocks, Reilly, 1986, pp. 138, 248)
