Private publication, inscribed by the author to Noel Kirshenbaum in 2014. This was reprinted from the California Historical Society Quarterly, Volume XLII, No. 1, March 1963. 5pp. Discusses the author's attempt to find the site of the famous 1872 diamond hoax that fooled WC Ralston. The Diamond Swindle of 1872 was a famous mining fraud carried out by Philip Arnold and John Slack, who convinced investors they had found a rich diamond field in the American West. By secretly "salting" the ground with purchased gems, they fooled leading financiers, including Charles Tiffany and associates of the Bank of California. The scheme collapsed when geologist Clarence King inspected the site and proved the stones had been planted. Arnold and Slack escaped with about $600,000, making the swindle one of the most notorious frauds in Western mining history. The site is at Diamond Peak, near the Colorado-Wyoming border.
