Six Companies at Boulder Dam. Silver medal awarded to men who were instrumental in building Boulder Dam by the Six Companies. This medal was awarded to "Fred A. Soderberg, General Foreman of Powerhouse" as engraved on the medal. The obverse features a very detailed engraving of the dam surrounded by "Boulder Dam / March 1931-December 1935." The reverse lists the names of the six companies which joined together to build the dam, as well as the name of Soderberg. "Sterling" is marked on the rim. These medals were likely treasured by the awardees and thus are extremely rare today. Also included are five tokens from the Boulder City Co. Stores. (Brass 5c, white metal, 5c, brass 10c, white metal 10c, and white metal $1.) These are scrip money printed by Six Companies and were given to workers as advances from their paycheck and they could only be used at local company stores. Workers in need of cash or goods not available at stores traded scrip, often at a loss. These depression era tokens were some of the last struck as the payment of wages in scrip became illegal in 1938 under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Douglas McDonald Collection.
