Photographer is A.W. Ericson. According to Mautz, Ericson (1844-1927) moved to Trinidad in 1869 and worked in the lumbering business till 1876. He started a photography business with his brother in Arcata and was active from 1895-1925. Three 8.75" x 11" pages, six photographs (7.75" x 9.5") total (one front and back). Includes: 1) No. 151. Excelsior Redwood Co. Eureka, Cal. Shows 15 train cars with very redwood logs on them and a few men posing. Contrast medium. Reverse side has No. 152. Same company. This view shows three locomotives with cars and redwood logs in tow. Medium contrast. 2) No. 31. Logging at Bayside. Shows logs being rolled down into water for transport off of locomotive. Splash visible! Reverse is No. 50. Labeled as Ericson. Shows coastline. Labeled "North Beach S.F." 3) Last two may be the best: No. 26. Two loggers with axes posing next to a redwood that has been cut thru, but not fallen yet. Pencil notations indicate "Oley Hanson Claim." Reverse is No. 130. Labelled in pencil, "at Glendale, Cala." Shows teams of horses pulling redwood logs up dirt rood. Many fallen trees on either side. Fantastic! Missing bottom left corner. Condition: all the photographs have medium contrast with little to some soiling. Very nice set from this photographer who was documenting the industry he had left in the 1870s!
