Number 267 to Oren Cotton for 100 shares in 1853. Signed by treasurer James Murphy and president Skerrett(?). Five small vignettes including semi-nude allegorical woman watching over the mine and resting on a strong box. Also an eagle, George Washington, woman soldier taking down a king and underground mining. A smallpox outbreak at the mine occurred in 1852 when it was just starting. By 1853 it was reported they were making headway on the mine. In 1855 the Virginia Chronicle reported in July that the State Hill Gold Mines in Louisa yielded $650. The expense of carrying the ore is $500 and required the service of 16 negroes and 4 white men. Small holes at top of center vertical fold. Small dog ear on bottom right. Overall in very nice condition. (Al Adams Gold Rush Memorabilia Collection) Date: 1853 Location: Louisa County, Virginia HWAC# 58272
