Small Ironstone Pitcher from the SS Central America. Approximate measurements 5.5 x 3.75 inches. The handle is 3.5 x 1.5 inches. Handle has a plant stem design. There is a floral pattern on handle near the top attached to the pitcher. There is what appears to be a lid attachment hardware on the rim. There is glazing hairline cracks approximately .25 inch below the lip. There is a crack on the inside spout approximately 1.25 inch. There are some glazing cracks, but no apparent chips. There is a small amount of staining. Ironstone is a type of pottery first made in the United Kingdom in the early 19th century. It is often classed as earthenware although in appearance it is similar to fine stoneware. It was developed in the 19th century by potters in Staffordshire, England, as a cheaper, mass-produced alternative for porcelain.
