In 1857 ,The Model 1 was the very first patented American Cartridge firearm to appear on the market. This was a very significant development as this was the very first American Revolver to use more than one self - contained metallic cartridge ,the .22 short rimfire. The compact size of the Model 1,seven round capacity and easy breaktop reloading made this revolver an instant success, especially popular with soldiers during the civil war and with individuals traveling west. 115,000 were made until 1868. Smith and Wesson captured the cartridge revolver market using the Rollin White patent until the Colt 1873 Single Action Army Peacemaker. This revolver was lettered through Roy Jinks and records show it was shipped from the factory April 9th 1864 to J.W.Storrs, New York City N.Y. Smith &Wesson’s sole agent from 1856 to 1869.
