This Smith and Wesson Model 3 American is chambered for 44 American. This series from Smith & Wesson was made between 1871 to 1874 for total production at 20000 pieces. This gun comes with the factory letter from S&W and confirms that the gun was originally shipped with a nickel finish and smooth walnut grips to a supplier M.W. Robinson Co. of New York City. It was the same Mr. Robinson that sent it back to the factory to have Ivory grips installed. Serial number 1201X puts this gun in production at mid-year 1872. The 8 in. nickel barrel is marked "Smith & Wesson Springfield, Mass. U.S.A. Pat. July 10, 60 Jan. 17. Feb. 17 July 11, 65 & Aug. 24, 69". The bore is good with minor pitting and fine rifling. The overall nickel finish is at 80% with the most wear at the grip frame. This is the #2 variation of this gun with a stronger firing pin and hammer lock-up to the frame and it works flawlessly. The ivory grips are two piece with a single retaining screw. Age on the grips is impressive with patinated rings visible from the bottom of the grips and an inscription on the inside from the original owner. This Smith & Wesson, now a successor to the original Scoffield patents, was Jesse James' favorite gun. It is not hard to imagine why once to put this gun into your hand. The frame is robust, an 8 in. barrel will point where it is told to, and the break top action is considerably stronger than the Colts. As a single action revolver this gun could fire rapidly on command. Now it could be yours.

The original slim-Jim holster is included with the factory letter from S&W along with a brief history of the original owners from farm country California.
