Smith & Wesson 'Wells Fargo' model .45 caliber Schofield revolver. This is an original government issued U. S. Army revolver with 'U. S.' mark still on the butt strap of the gun. These Wells Fargo models were surplus military issued revolvers hat had their barrel cut down from 7" to 5". The revolver is marked on the barrel with 'W. F. & Co. Ex.' with a guard number of 425. This would have also been used as the serial number. The Wells Fargo Model Schofield's were brought by Bannerman's of New York in a military surplus sale to resell to Wells Fargo for guard use. According to Bartz In the years between 1861 and 1885 the supply depot in San Francisco bought firearms from gun dealers; as did Plate & Co., Liddle & Keading, and Shreve & Wolf. The bore is in nice condition with minor spots. The revolver is mechanically tight and functions well. Originally this was a nickel gun which is rarer. Faded nickle on the frame. Original wood grips with three "KILL NOTCHES." Note: black powder antique. City: State: Date: c1880 HWAC# 30575
