Lot of three 1) Annual Report 1880 includes the following papers: 1) The Writings of James Smithson (founder of the Smithsonian), 2) Casts of Indian Heads, 3) Lists of articles deposited at the Corcoran Art Gallery in 1879, 4) Collections of the National Museum, etc. In 1829, Smithson, an Englishman, donated his fortune to the people of the United States for the "increase and diffusion of knowledge" [sil.si.edu]. The institute was established in 1846. Hardbound in brown cloth. 631 pp. 2) Annual Report 1898 includes reports from the executive committee, etc. With illustrations of the evolution of satellites, x-rays, cathode rays, mechanical flight, light and its artificial production, Crater Lake, Omaha Totem, stone implements, and archaeological work in Arizona. Includes scale drawings of Samuel P. Langley's Aerodrome, a steam powered flying machine. At this time, the report notes that Langley had two successful aerodromes. The weight of each was about thirty pounds when ready for flight. Hardbound in green cloth with lettering in gilt. 686 pp. 3) Annual Report 1902 includes reports of the Assistant Secretary, and Head Curators. With the following papers: "Anthropological Studies in California," Holmes, William Henry. "Ceramic art in China," Hippisely, Alfred E. "History of Musical Scales," Wead, Charles Kasson. "Collection of Hopi Ceremonial Pigments," Hough, Walter. "Collections of Gems in the U.S. National Museum," Tassin, Wirt. "...The Meteorite Collection in the U.S. National Museum, Tassin, Wirt. "Aboriginal American Harpoons," Mason, Otis Tufton. Otis Tufton Mason proposed the name of American "Anthological" Society at the organization's formative meeting which took place at the Smithsonian in 1879 [aaanet.org]. He also wrote the organization's constitution. Hardbound in green cloth and brown leather with marbled end sheets. 738 pp.
