Two promissory notes dated March 1877, Virginia, Nevada; one for ten (#32) and one for twenty (#10) dollars in gold coin with interest at one percent per month from the Society of Pacific Coast Pioneers.
This was a fraternal organization open to men who had come to California and Nevada in the very early years. The Society in Nevada had a meeting hall in Virginia City, and it burned in the huge fire of 1875. These notes are actually promissory notes drawn to raise money to build a new hall. By 1877, when these notes were issued, mining in Virginia City was declining and the new hall was never built. The notes are 8 x 5 inches and have a vignette of the biggest bear you've ever seen.
