Rare Virginia City scrip. No. 70C, issued for $5 by the Society of Pacific Coast Pioneers in Virginia City, Nevada on March 20, 1877. Signed by president RH Taylor and the secretary. 5 x 8.25" Black print and bear vignette. The Society of Pacific Coast Pioneers was a fraternal organization composed of members who had made it out West before the end of the Gold Rush. The Virginia City chapter was formed on June 22, 1872 and admitted two other levels: male descendants of Gold Rush pioneers and honorary members. The society's hall on B Street was destroyed in the great fire of 1875. The $20,000 building only had $3,000 insurance. These bonds were issued to rebuild the structure, which was rebuilt. Given the Comstock's decline in the late 1870s, the society died out in the 1890s.
