In the 1980s, the Tri-State Mint in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, collaborated with the State of South Dakota to produce a branded line of silver and gold bullion for investment. this lot is a display set of several different sizes and metal types in this series.

The obverse design contains two bison and the year 1987 and "SOUTH DAKOTA" along the top edge, while the reverse is a copy of the Great Seal of the State of South Dakota with the year 1889 near the bottom edge. it displays three major industries of South Dakota at the time of statehood: mining, represented by a smelter, commerce, represented by a steamship, and agriculture, represented by a farmer plowing with a team of horses and cattle in a field.

When closed, the hinged display case is approximately 8.5x 13.5-inches and about two inches thick with a simulated black leather cover and white metal hinges and clasps. There are no markings or labels on any outside surface of the display case.

When open, the left half of the case displays a double-matted, full-color promotional flyer for the South Dakota Bison bullion program. The right half displays three silver and four gold bullion sizes in two columns as described below.

ALL SEVEN SPECIMENS ARE PLATED BRASS. The silver samples show some toning and tarnish that has developed over decades. The gold samples show some minor tarnish. None of the samples are encapsulated in plastic.

Both sides of the case are covered by a glued-in sheet of window glass, and to avoid damaging the display, no attempt has been made to test the samples for metal content.

Included in the display are the following:

LEFT COLUMN:
1 oz Fine Silver showing the obverse.
5 oz Fine Silver showing the reverse.
10 oz Fine Silver showing the obverse.

RIGHT COLUMN:
10 oz Fine Gold showing the obverse.
5 oz Fine Gold showing the reverse.
2 oz Fine Gold showing the obverse.
1 oz Fine Gold showing the reverse.
