Brown Manufacturing Co. and Merrimack Arms Co. of Newburyport Mass, produced about 16,500 of these single shot .41 rim fire caliber black powder derringers from 1866-1873.The octagon barrel is 2 ½ “ long and pivots to the right side for loading .Barrels were blued and brass frame versions were usually silver finished. They had rosewood or walnut grips, this one is rosewood. ’SOUTHERN’ is clearly marked on top of the barrel. The side of the barrel is marked;” MERRIMACK ARMS &MANUFACTURING CO/NEWBURYPORT, MASS/PAT. APRIL 9, 1867”. Condition is fair considering it’s age, bore is fair. Action functions well. Overall a nice piece of Americana from the civil war era. State: City: Date: ID#45773
