Preceding that was the Sausalito Land and Ferry Co which started in 1867 and became the Golden Gate Ferry Co., part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Once the Oakland Bay Bridge, one of the longest spans in the U.S. opened, spanning San Francisco Bay in 1936, 6 months before the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, the ferry boats ceased running.
