Hit & Miss. Fairmont Engine. A hit-and-miss engine is a type of internal combustion engine that is controlled by a governor to only fire at a set speed. It was conceived in the late 19th century and produced by various companies from the 1890s through approximately the 1940s. The name comes from the speed control on these engines: they fire ("hit") only when operating at or below a set speed, and cycle without firing ("miss") when they exceed their set speed. Includes Manual. The Fairmont motor was the brain child of a handcar operator named Fred Mahlman. He got tired of pumping the handcar back to Fairmont after a hard days work. So, he put a motor on the handcar and history was changed forever. Found at Mina. Although Mina was a stop on the Carson & Colorado Railroad, this stove says Southern Pacific. The SP bought out the C&C in 1904. Mina is located 70 miles northwest of Hawthorne in Mineral County. On page 20 of “Slim Rails Through the Sand” by George Turner, one can find a hit-and-miss engine n a work car that looks exactly like this one.
