Texas Division--From Jefferson to El Paso. Construction Series A. Memphis, El Paso & Pacific Railroad Company. Text mentions that company is indebted to John C. Fremont for $1,000 for 50 acres of Agricultural Land. March 1868. Three corporate signatures. Fremont signs the reverse. 4.75 x 7.75" John C. Fremont was an American explorer, military officer, and politician whose expeditions in the 1840s helped map the American West and earn him the nickname "The Pathfinder." He played a key role in the U.S. conquest of California during the Mexican-American War and later became one of the first two U.S. Senators from the new state. In 1856, Fremont was the first presidential candidate of the newly formed Republican Party, running on a platform opposing the expansion of slavery. The Southern Trans-Continental Railroad refers to the southernmost route of America's transcontinental rail lines, ultimately linking the Gulf of Mexico and the Southwest to California. Championed in the 1850s by Southern politicians‚-especially Jefferson Davis‚-it aimed to secure a warm-weather, low-elevation path across the continent. After the Civil War, the dream was realized through lines such as the Southern Pacific, which completed a continuous southern route to the Pacific in the 1880s.
