Around 1858, one of the popular souvenirs from Mount Vernon was a cane made from wood cut from trees on the plantation. The practice started while it was still a private home, and after it became a museum in 1860, as property of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, canes were officially sold as souvenirs. Any decorative features, like the silver cap was a custom accents added by the recipient. This cane has a very large sterling silver top. There are several ounces of silver and it is not marked, due to the fact that the U.S. Government did not require silver content markings until 1907. The top shows use wear, but is silver with no brass evident. The cane measures 37" in length, with a 3"x 1.5" silver cap. A VERY historic and rare piece. Also included is a matted and framed photo of a contingent of visitors to the home. Lapel ribbons on the men seem to indicate that this was some sort of convention in the late 1800s. The 9"x 10" (14"x 18" with frame) photo was taken by Luke C. Dillon, the Official Photographer of Mount Vernon (1836-1904). Please see photos for more details. [ Mount Vernon Virginia
