This lot carries items recovered from a Spanish galleon that sank off the Florida coast in 1733. Items include several brass nails, several round ball ammunition, a brass trunnion shaft, and a ballast rock. The hardware has copper sulfate oxidation consistent with the oxidation of brass, including the crudely made short trunnion shaft, where brass hardware would last longer under salt water conditions for ocean vessel construction. The trunnion shaft has been file-fit for its application and not machine turned. Large round ball ammunition would be consistent with shoulder arms of the period as well as small hand cannons located on the deck rails. The inane rock was included in ship construction where the hull was ballasted to keep the ship upright until properly loaded. Upon arrival at a distant shore, the ballast rocks were offloaded and made way for real cargo on the return trip. This is one of those rocks.
