Early Virginia document. Special Tax to pay the first year's installment of subscription of stock in the James River and Kanawha Company. William Warwick paid $89.78. Ornate left border. Measures 3" x 7.5" and is signed by the collector (illegible). Folds, otherwise great condition. The James River and Kanawha Company was part of a canal project started in 1746 to help interior Virginia farmers transport their goods to the market. This was accomplished by widening rivers, building dams, and creating bridges and aqueducts. The company became a joint public/private charter in 1832. It took them three years to get enough investors. In 1835, the General Assembly officially granted a charter, and Joseph Cabell was elected as its first president. The project was not ultimately successful due to subscribers not paying and flooding problems.
