Original broadside for the Fairview Vigilant Society, 1861. The broadside lists the members of the vigilant society in the lower third. This society was formed in Fairview Township, Fulton county, Illinois in 1861. The piece is accompanied by a lengthy xerographic summary of the biographies of each of the members. (Vohees was burned out twice, Wykoff arrived by wagon, Polhemus pioneer of county, etc.) The society was formed for the detection of thieves and robbers, with the principal job of protecting local farmers from the theft of horses and livestock. The vigilant society met at the Dutch Reformed Church in Fairview. A number of these men or their children served in the Civil War. Extremely rare original village and society broadside. City: Fairview State: Illinois Date: 1861 ID# 37363
