Spectacular Squash Blossom Necklace, the best we've had here in 40 years. When we saw this piece the first time, it was a knee-buckler. Silver with exquisite bright sky-blue turquoise, unsigned. This necklace was custom made for a jewelry shop in Sonora, California probably in the late 1950's to early 1960s. The shop owner died in the mid-1990s and the goods have been in storage ever since. The goods included are a wonderful Kachina collection, many baskets, and a large amount of silver turquoise jewelry offered in this sale. This necklace is the clear highlight of the entire collection. While much information on the shop was handed down through the past decades, the name of the silversmith family is unknown. It was reported that the Sonora store owner traveled Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico, bought turquoise from different mines, and took it to New Mexico where this family lived and worked, making jewelry for this family's shop in Sonora. It was retained by the family as the best piece they ever got. None of the expertly hand crafted silver and turquoise jewelry received from this Native American family was signed. A photo of two of the women in this New Mexico Native American family survives, reported to family as the makers, and is present with this lot and shown here. Unfortunately, as is often common with close friends, there are no names written on the backs of the photographs, and surviving family members do not know the names of the people. We offer the photos here in the sincere hopes someone will recognize these wonderful craftsmen. The necklace has parallel strands 15” long, each containing six large bright sky blue turquoise with sulfides typical of the early Kingman turquoise. The center piece horseshoe is adorned by three stones on top and one at top center and on each tip of the horse shoe. Each stone is custom cut with custom silver encasement. It weighs just under a pound at 13.5 ozs.
