This wonderful rifle is the famous 56-56 caliber Spenser repeating rifle. One like this was shown to Abraham Lincoln on the Whitehouse Lawn by Christopher Spenser at the beginning of the Civil War and both proceeded to have some target practice as Lincoln commissioned the Ordinance Dept to procure these weapons for the Union. Rifles like this one and perhaps this one was used by the sniper forces as they were a 7 shot .52 caliber repeater and as with this rifle a 30" barrel for effective long-range use. Some were equipped with rifle scopes. The Navy ordered 1200 in 1861 and the Lincoln contract was in 1862. Ultimately 200, 000 rifles and carbines were produced. This rifle has had the three banded stock shortened to one band, a period gunsmithing but the barrel is still 30" SN: 25512, JMD Oval Tag: 8963, Condition: Good, >
