This wonderful rifle is the famous 56-56 caliber Spenser repeating rifle. One like this was shown to Abraham Lincoln on the Whitehouse Lawn by Christopher Spenser at the beginning of the Civil War and both proceeded to have some target practice as Lincoln commissioned the Ordinance Dept to procure these weapons for the Union. Rifles like this one and perhaps this one was used by the sniper forces as they were a 7 shot .52 caliber repeater and as with this rifle a 30" barrel for effective long-range use.
