A fantastic specimen featuring Spessartine (garnet) and Smoky Quartz crystals. Spessartine is a nesosilicate, manganese aluminium garnet. Spessartine forms a solid solution series with the garnet species Almandine. Spessartine, like the other garnet species, always occurs as a "blend" with other species. Crystals with high Spessartine content tend toward a light orange hue, while Almandine prevalence induces red or brownish hues. Orange Spessartine garnets most frequently occur in sodium-rich, granitic pegmatites. The deposit at Tongbei, Fujian Province, China is a essentially a large exposed "dome" of granite. The Spessartine crystals line the interiors of small, discreet pockets within the granitic mass and occur as fracture fillings within the granite. This specimen features a continuous "carpet" of bright orange, highly lustrous, trapezohedral Spessartine crystals in association with black Smoky Quartz crystals.
