A fine example of the yellow "triphane" variety of the mineral spodumene. The varietal term "triphane" is derived from the Greek "triphanes", meaning "appearing threefold", pointing to the mineral's characteristically threefold natural cleavages. The term "triphane" was used in the 19th and 20th century, especially in French mineralogical literature as a synonym for the proper name for the mineral species ... spodumene. Later, in the 20th century the term "triphane" has been used, especially in USA, as a colorless or yellowish colored variety of spodumene. This yellow, transparent, lustrous spodumene specimen was a recent discovery from the gem-bearing pegmatites located in the Mawi valley, a small western branch of the Kolum valley. Dimensions (cm): 7.5 H x 6 W x 3.5 D. 199.2 grams. Location: Mawi pegmatite, Nilaw-Kolum pegmatite field, Du Ab District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan
