Lot of 2. The Squirrel Hunters defended Cincinnati from an attack by Confederate troops in 1862. Civilians from sixty-five counties, numbering 15,766 men, reported for duty at Cincinnati. 1) Discharge certificate for E.W. Vanhorn. "Our Southern Border was menaced by the enemies of our Union. David Rod, Governor of Ohio called on the Minute Men of the State and the "Squirrel Hunters" came by thousands to the rescue. You E.W. Vanhorn were one of them and this is your honorable discharge." September 1862. Preprinted signatures of Chas W. Hill, Adt. General of Ohio and Malcober(?) McDonell, mayor & ADC. Gorgeous certificate with vignettes of a general, the governor(?), and a man with a long rifle standing across from a squirrel perched on a branch. Printed by Ehrgott, Forbriger & Co., Cincinnati.
