February 18th double ring CDS. Earliest usage of this postmark when purchased. The year of 1861 could be determined by the green ink which was only known to be used from February to July of 1861. Addressed to Fanny Marcy. She was the sister in law to General George McClelland. Her father, Randolph Marcy, was McClelland's chief of staff. At the time of this mailing McClelland was president of the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad. Within two months he would re-enlist and in three years he would run against Abraham Lincoln for president.
