Ben Holladay was famous as the owner of the Overland Mail Route for many years. But he got his start in San Francisco with steamers. This is aa 1863 letterhead for the California, Oregon, and Mexican Steamship Lines! But Holladay was also closely tied to Nevada. He speculated in gold and silver: This letter says, "To cash paid for 5 feet Ophir [Virginia City, Nevada] 2150 $10,750." That is $2,150 per foot for a total of $10, 750. It was quite an investment but it paid for his accumulation of stages and made him one of the very largest employers in the United States in the 1850's. It also gave him wealth enough to build his own mansion called the Ophir. The stories of its opulence were legendary. For example the front doors were wide enough and tall enough to let a Concord Stage inside. Background information on Holladay and his Nevada connection.
