This 10.04 ounce, .999 silver ingot is hallmarked on the side with 'SMM' within a circle, which is the trademark for the State of Maine Mine in Tombstone, Arizona. The State of Maine Mine was a gold and silver mine active in the late 1800s and early 1900s, noted to be 'flourishing' in the 1880. After a decades-long closure it was eventually reopened in the 1970s, which was when this ingot was produced by Tombstone local and mine owner Charlie Escapule. Escapule had a storied life; born and raised in Tombstone, he worked as a miner and rancher in his youth before leaving home to serve in the Korean War. Upon his return home, he worked for the Tombstone school district and later the U.S. Department of Agriculture, finally returning to mining in his 40s. The ingot is 3 1/8 inches long, 3/4 inches tall, and 3/4 inch wide at the base. It comes from a long-time Tombstone collection; it's the first one of these we've ever had.
