Stearns was an original discoverer of the Clyde Ledge in the Amador Mining District. The oldest mining district in eastern Nevada. The Amador portion, 6 miles north of Austin around New York Canyon, joined and was later incorporated into the Reese River district. Stearns was a trustee of the Butte Gold & Silver mine. He was also a superintendent of the Stearns Gold & Silver mine in this same area. Pond was a secretary of several Austin, Nevada mining companies. In 1876, with the help of London backers, he purchased a large acreage of mining land on the Feather River. He became the superintendent of the Tsabinda Mine.
