Very rare; we have not offered this before. No. 481, issued for 590 shares to John W. Candler of Boston in 1860 in New York. Signed by vice president Chauncey Bush and secretary JW Hayes. Not cancelled. Three vignettes: mine hoisting scene, rugged mountains, and chemist/assayer. 6.25 x 10.75" Folds, uneven border. This mine was first discovered in 1849 and was later acquired by six men from Las Cruces. They brought in Hugh Stephenson from Concordia (El Paso) to provide capital. Stephenson forced the others out and worked the mine successfully for several years, making a huge profit of $50-75 thousand dollars. He then sold it to soldiers from Ft. Fillmore who formed the Fort Fillmore Silver Mining Co. The mine was confiscated by the Texas Mounted Rifles in 1861 and became known as the San Augustine mine. The Confederates left New Mexico in July 1862 and the mine was worked by other men for several decades. Many pages of history of the mine accompany the certificate
