Thomas opened his general store in La Porte in 1868 and was installed as an officer in the Masonic Lodge of La Porte in 1874. Eventually, Thomas went into business with another prominent local, Simeon Wheeler, the cashier and notary at the La Porte Bank and Wells Fargo Agent. Thomas was also a part of the La Porte Guards, part of the volunteer Sierra Brigade, being elected to 5th Sergeant on June 24, 1863. Garvis Collection. La Porte California
