This is a single stereo-view of Alcatraz Island with coastal artillery cannons in the foreground looking north out to Richardson Bay. c.1864. The photograph was taken by Eadweard Muybridge and published by Bradley and Rulofson. Muybridge is best known for his photography of a horse in motion and later humans in motion which laid the principles of motion pictures that developed into the motion picture industry that we know today.

The Bradley and Rulofson partnership of San Francisco is known for a scandal that involved photographing military installations and thought to have been Confederate spies during the war between the states. Their negatives were seized by the War Department in violation of publishing and selling photos of military installation to the general public. The negatives were later returned after a legal settlement was made. This is one of those photographs. A closer look at the photo reveals the cannons in the foreground but also buoys in the bay which serves as navigation markers but also distance markers for the cannoneers.

Condition is very good.
