Thomas Houseworth & Co., No. 9 Montgomery St. "743. GOLD HILL--From Fort Homestead, Bowers' Canon." Built in the late spring of 1864, Fort Homestead sat atop a small hill leased from the Homestead Mining Co. overlooking Gold Hill and Virginia City. It was administered by the local militia. In the fall of 1865 the General Grant, a 24 pounder gun, was placed here at Ft. Homestead for celebrations. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad's tunnel No. 3 passed through Homestead Hill and under the fort in 1869.
