Lawrence & Houseworth stereoview, published in 1865, showing "Gold Hill." Two mines with readable signs are the Alpha (left) and Minerva Mining Co. (right) which became the Exchequer Mine. FH notes that this view shows where the Yellow Jacket open pit is now today. Possibly taken from Sandy Bowers cabin. Medium contrast, sharp focus. Two famous upper Gold Hill mines in the mid-1860s. The Alpha was staked as almost 300 feet on the Lode in 1859. It was reported to have higher silver content than other Gold Hill mines, but was ultimately a disappointing producer. The same was true of the Exchequer. [Ansari]
