Stereoview from Continent Stereoscopic Company, New York, Descriptive Views of the American Continent (active c.1870s-90s). This view is mislabeled as "82. Mining Works at Virginia City, Nevada." The reason we believe this is wrong is because of the sign on the top of the building in the center of the view: "Leviathan M. Co." The Leviathan Mine was in Gold Hill, not Virginia City. It was located east of and next to the Belcher and Crown Point. In 1876, they had sunk a shaft 600 ft. with multiple drifts and promising findings (Annual Mining Review & Stock Ledger, 1876). The stereoview shows 11 people in front of the mine building with other buildings on the hillside in the background. Medium contrast, sharp focus. Stamped on the reverse: "From Ewald's Bazar, 156 Newark Avenue, Jersey City" and labelled in pen "Mining Works at Virginia City Nevada" (which is incorrect ID).
