Stibnite, McNamara Mine, Manhattan District, Nevada. Stibnite, small hand specimen with a cavity filled with dark grey to blue-black acicular crystals about 1/4-to-3/8 inches long. Overall size is approx 2 x 1.25 x 1.25 inches and 32 grams. Two paper notes with it indicate it either came from the McNamara Mine of the Tonopah District, or it is from the White Caps Mine in the Manhattan District, Manhattan, Nevada. The Manhattan District is about 50 miles north of Tonopah, Nevada, and early silver production began in the 1860s but the mines were abandoned by 1871. Mining resumed in earnest by 1905 but declined again after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and subsequent economic recession. By 1909 mining production had picked up again, giving credence to the town's nickname, "Town of New Beginnings." Significant mining operations were conducted from the 1970s through the 1990s. Today, visitors can see the standing ruins of the Nye & Ormsby County Bank -- the only stone structure built in the town -- and visit the Manhattan Bar & Hotel. Manhattan District Nevada
