No. 84, issued to inventor and company founded WC Stiles for 1,000 shares on August 26th, 1878 in San Francisco. Signed by president Wilson and secretary Bean. Not cancelled. Black border and print, two vignettes: locomotive (bottom center) and Atlas holding a globe (upper left). Printed by Crocker & Co. Folds, light wear. 4 x 9" According to a detailed article in the July 20th, 1878 issue of the Mariposa Gazette (which includes an illustration), this company built rotary steam engines for many purposes including boats. Stiles even had one on display in the basement of the Cosmopolitan Hotel in San Francisco. A later article from that year says the engine will be on display at the Mechanics' Institute Fair in SF, and will be over 100 horsepower with two cylinders that are 20 ft. in length. This stock is also listed by Terry Cox, so they may have used these in locomotives also.
