Scarce American Merchants Union Express Company stock certificate signed by William G. Fargo, as President in 1868. No. 918, 25 shares to Dennis M. Fitch of New York, a notable silver smith and jeweler in the 1800s. Canceled, also signed by the Secretary and Treasurer, with more signatures on reverse. Revenue stamp. In 1866 the Merchants Union Express Company was formed to compete with American Express. A fierce price war ensued and within months Merchants Union Express lost millions. American Express bought out the failing company in 1868 and it was renamed American Merchants Express Co. with William G. Fargo taking over as President. In 1973 it was absorbed into American Express. American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History. [
