This stock is more about the people than the company. It is signed by H. H. Bancroft as president. We all know his impact on histories of western states. That alone brings great significance to this stock. It is signed by secretary Knight. Knight worked in the background of the Bancroft offices. He was a bookseller, but in 1861 sold his store as it was not very profitable. He found a job at Bancrofts. By 1863 he was put in charge of the publishing house of the company. Here he organized the back shelves and for the first time it became easy to see if requested books were available. When Bancroft was overseas he created personal library for the company of one of every book that was often requested in the area of local Western history that Bancroft was becoming so famous for. One day a man came into Knight's office with some Nevada mining sketches he wanted to put into a book. Knight recognized him as none other than Mark Twain. And his prolific writing career was begun. Issued to William Henry Hall. His father moved to Stockton in 1860 and put a piece of land from the Stockton Park Homestead Association in 1870. Hall would become an engineer and surveyed the first deep-sea vessel canal into the city of Stockton.
