Fabulous framed map (long section) on linen of the famous Speculator mine, owned by the North Butte Mining Co. The North Butte was the largest mining company at Butte at this time. It was a very successful company, paying handsome dividends. When the company was formed in 1905, the Speculator shaft was 1700 feet deep . within a few years it was reconditioned and sunk to 2240 feet deep by 1907. Before 1907 they had 18000 feet of underground workings, expanded to more than 25000 feet by the end of 1907. The company produced about 16 to 40 million pounds of copper per year, run through the Anaconda smelter. (see Weed 1908, pp1049 to1052). This map is notable because it is the production map used by the mine engineers as stopes were made or enlarged, showing the dates of mining through the end of 1910 down to the 2240 level. The stopes are all marked with dates mined showing raises between 100 foot levels. This is a choice representation of one of the great Montana mines. Framed handsomely with old wood and moss covered bark. 28 x 64".
