Suite of three Arkansas General Land Office Maps from 1837, 1850 and 1852. The 1837 map 15 x 17.5" by Edward Cross. The only towns shown by the surveyor are Fayetteville, Fulton, Columbia, Helena, Memphis, Batesville, Little Rock, Fort Smith, Washington, . All significant rivers are labeled. Townships in which surveys are not completed are shown in various color shades. Indian lands are shown, as well as disputed lands along the Texas line. The population of Arkansas in 1837 was about 50,000 and was growing very fast. The population in 1830 was just 30,388, and by 1840 97,574 when westward expansion was well under way. It doubled again by 1850 to about 210,000. Farming had become the "go-to" industry, but it was more often than not, unprofitable. A few lead/zinc mines had been discovered.
The 1850 GLO map, about 17 x 24", L. Gibson, surveyor, shows a much higher quality of land survey results, again noting Indian lands and significant rivers. Several towns were added to the map: Van Buren, Hot Springs, Pine Bluff.
The 1852 map, also by Gibson, about 17 x 18". Indian lands are noted as are the usual problematic Township surveys that were found to contain errors. No new towns were added.
