.50 caliber saddle ring carbine, similar to a split breech, with original carbine style Remington sights. A very rare post-Civil War breech loading carbine with only 5000 produced. Assembled at Springfield Armory in 1868 with actions/receivers made by Remington. It is believed a great many were scrapped, which makes it a scarce piece, according to Flayderman. Condition: 20" Barrel, excellent rifling, excellent action. Breech works well. Excellent furniture. Looks to have the original lanyard rings removed by Remington as it was done more than likely for the commercial market. A very rare and excellent single-shot carbine for the collector of breech loading Civil War carbines.

The tang is marked Remington Illion N.Y. USA. Patented May 3, November 18, 1864, April 17, 1865. This rifle is mounted with front blade sight and three position hinged leaf sight marked out to 300 and 500 yards. There is a British proof mark on the left side barrel band. Stock is smooth in very nice condition. The saddle ring is intact and the action works well. Bore is smooth and nice as is the overall finish of the metal part of the gun. It is reported that some were shipped overseas to foreign governments. This particular rifle has 5 small slash marks on the left of the fore- end stock which often denote "kill marks" of the day.

This appears to be a British export with no cartouche marks or U.S. markings on the gun.

A very rare and beautiful piece of historic importance for the collector or the black powder shooter.
