#72 for 25 shares to O Cromwell. Datelined Carson City 1863. Signed by secretary PW Van Winkle and president J Dovey (?). Incorporated June 24, 1863. Steamship vignette. No printer - probably printed locally. 25c Certificate Revenue stamp. Not cancelled. Located at Savanah Ledge, Alpine Mining District. "Supposed to be in Douglas County, N. T." clearly printed on the stock certificate! This must be a reference to the fact that it is on the California/Nevada border. There is no Alpine District in Nevada that fits this description, Therefore, it must refer to a mine at Silver Mountain! Several Carson City datelines have passed through this company for Silver Mountain mines. Silver Mountain was an eternity away from Placerville in the winter and spring and less than 10 miles to Genoa, Nevada and a little further to Carson City. Very nice condition. According to the 1873/4 V&T Directory Eli Barclay and Oliver Cromwell sold fruits, nuts, etc. However, he received the most notoriety when he shot himself with a shotgun and the doctors amputated his arm up to his shoulder. Van Winkle was used by many local mining companies as a secretary. He arrived in the Utah Territory (Nevada) in 1859 and purchased a plot of land in Grass Valley (between the Walker and Carson rivers). Background notes on Cromwell and Van Winkle. Also a discussion on the location of the mine
